This workshop aims at bringing together scholars from diverse fields, interested in explaining, exploring, and assessing the multifaceted interrelationship between nature and human beings. Nature (with both its biotic and abiotic components) provides people with a number of goods and services which constitute the foundations for human life and wellbeing, and which have traditionally been referred to as “Ecosystem Services”. This workshop yearns for high-quality presentations describing original interdisciplinary research results or case studies concerning Ecosystem Services assessment models and mapping, as well as their implications for practitioners, academics, and decision makers.
Following the growing interest for Ecosystem Services upon the release of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) and, later, of initiatives such as “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity” (TEEB 2010), the “Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services” (CICES), or “Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services” (MAES), in the last decade a number of studies on the very definition of the ecosystem services concept or on ecosystem services assessment frameworks have emerged, as well as methods to assess them qualitatively or quantitatively (including, but not limited to, monetary evaluations). Moreover, the rapidly growing amount of spatial data concerning the distribution of biodiversity has spurred the surge of various models and spatial analyses of ecosystem services. Notwithstanding the huge progress made since the release of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, a significant interdisciplinary effort is still required in order, on the one hand, to understand how biodiversity works to deliver ecosystem services, how (and to what extent) such services are supplied, how human activities (first and foremost land-use/land-cover change) impact on the supply of Ecosystem Services, and how supply and demand are spatially intertwined, and, on the other hand, how this body of knowledge can be put to good use to inform decision-making.
The workshop will especially welcome contributions that innovate this research field by proposing cutting-edge methods, up-to-date methodological reviews, case study assessments, especially those that address interdisciplinarity, or that offer suggestions on how to integrate assessments into decision-making processes, or to involve ecosystem services beneficiaries in the assessments.
All accepted papers will be published in the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) Series. Accepted papers will be scheduled for oral presentation. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register, to attend the conference and to present the paper.
The only language of the conference will be English.

The proceedings of the ESSP 2023 Workshop will appear in the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. To submit a paper, please connect to the Submission site from the link available at the ICCSA 2023 (www.iccsa.org). Only papers submitted through the electronic system and strictly adhering to the relevant format will be considered for reviewing and publication.
The paper must deal with original and unpublished work.
All submissions will be reviewed by at least two experts in the relevant field.
The submitted paper must be camera-ready, between 6 pages (short-paper) or 10 - 16 pages (long-paper) and formatted according to the LNCS rules. Please consult the formatting information and templates in Author's Instructions page.
