BEGIN aims to develop a multilevel methodological-operational protocol useful in regional, national, European and non-EU contexts for conservation, regeneration, valorisation, fruition, and management of “ghost towns”.

The project aims to develop seven main outputs:

1.  the census and cataloguing of abandoned towns in Italy;
2. the realization of a Documentation and Interpretation Centre on the abandonment phenomenon in the Euro-Mediterranean area;
3. a prototype platform for virtual reality applications for the knowledge, valorisation, and fruition of Craco “ghost town” (Basilicata region);
4. a prototype GIS web platform for the multilevel and multitemporal knowledge of Craco vecchia;
5. a pilot project for the geoconservation of Craco;
6. a manual of best practices for the geoconservation of abandoned sites;
7. a manual of best practices for the valorisation and fruition of abandoned sites.
